Sweet Things: Baked Apples

Take 5: Apples, prune, muesli, butter, golden syrup.

Baked apples are quintessential winter comfort food. A happy place to go in the cool of winter. Also, they take two seconds to put together – and can cook, quite contentedly, while you are eating dinner.

Blog 71 - ST ServedI used Granny Smith apples for this recipe. Choose one for each person – bigger is better. Take the cores out with a sharp, small knife, keeping the apples intact. Sit in an oven-proof dish.

Put a prune (or dates or sultanas, if you prefer) in the base of each apple. Then add one teaspoon of nutty muesli and another prune. Now add a knob of butter on top and a dessertspoon of golden syrup over each apple.

Bake at 170°C (338°F) till the apples are tender, then serve with the syrup poured over. Ice cream and/or cream are perfect accompaniments. Leftovers are great for breakfast with more muesli.
